This information has been copied from a book called, "Owosso,
Michigan, A To Z" and "Portrait and Biographical Album" of Shiawassee
County, Michigan. Both outline family information on Asa Wright.
John Alexander Wright, a native of Ireland, settled in Canada in
1839. He married Alice Dunn and had at least one child; William.
William Wright was born in Frontenac, Portland County, Ontario,
Canada November 29, 1842. William married Rhoda Ann Orser in 1870 and
their children were: George U., Edmund Grant, Asa Torrence, Howard and
a daughter, Sadie Pearl They came to Owosso Township in 1876. They
lived very near the Mathias farm, the site of a large house resembling an
old English manor. They moved to Owosso City in 1903.
William died May 3, 1911. He and Rhoda are buried in Dewey
Cemetery.
George U. Wright was born on January 21, 1871 in Sydenham,
Ontario, to William and Rhoda Ann (Orser) Wright. He lived with his
parents near Burton, Owosso Township.
At the age of 15, George enrolled in Vande Venter's Business_School,
which was located in the upstairs of the building on the northwest corner
of Main and Washington Streets.
Music was George's whole life. He played with the Owosso Light
Infantry Band, the Owosso City Band, and he was a member later of the
Old Band Boys. His musical career with the Shrine Band of Saginaw took
him all over the United States and Canada.
George married Bessie Douglass, daughter of Hugh Douglass, a
cooper in Owosso. Bessie was born in November of 1871 in Michigan.
They lived on North Saginaw Street. They had no children. George died
in 1966 at the Ovid Nursing Home, the oldest musician in Owosso and
the oldest living charter member of the Owosso Elks Lodge. Even in his
90s, George showed up wherever there was music, the Elks Lodge, the
Owosso City Club, any band concert.
Edmund Grant Wright married Minnie Holland and her sister Anna lived
with them. When he was semi-retired, he clerked in various Byerly
stores. (It was Grant who told many stories about the Mathias farm.)
Asa Torrence Wright was born in Sydenham, Ontario on August 4,
1872 to William and Rhoda Ann (Orser) Wright. He was the proprietor of
the Central Casting Company. He married Mary Alta Brown (daughter of
Eugene Brown and Clarissa Olive Love) in Owosso on March 25, 1903. Their
home was at 601 Shiawassee Street.
The Wright's had three children: Asa Jr., born in 1906; Thelma
(married a Hartshorn), born in 1910; and Maxwell Eugene, born in 1914. Asa
served as the Mayor of Owosso from 1932 to 1934. He was a Methodist and a
Republican.
Nothing more known on Howard Wright.
Sadie Pearl Wright married a Mr. Claud Nutson. Doug Nutson is
Sadie's grandson.
